Africa Latin America

Two Continents, One Mission

“The Lord is moving in Africa, preparing and empowering the African Church to make a significant impact in reaching the lost.”

A Latin America Perspective on Mission Momentum Africa

A Mission Momentum in Africa

What a surprise it was to hear a very familiar battle cry in Africa, one we’ve been proclaiming since 1987 in Latin America: “From a mission field to a mission force.” This is no coincidence, but a movement of the Holy Spirit connecting our two continents—both among the most Christianized in the world—to join in the same dance: the dance of missions.

Mission Momentum Africa was a powerful demonstration of what the Lord is doing in the Global South. The Church, growing rapidly and reaching every level of society, is now awakening to its calling to become a mission force. Led by Membley Community Chapel in Nairobi, Kenya, and in partnership with over 20 other churches, this conference saw more than 200 vibrant African youth who gathered to be challenged, to recover discipleship as the core of the Great Commission, and to prepare to disciple nations.

Hearts Stirred Towards His Calling

For two full days, they worshiped, danced, and sang with incredible energy. Yet, they also listened intently to what the Lord is saying to the Church in Africa. We were deeply moved to see so many of them eagerly taking notes during every session.

There was a remarkable unity among the keynote speakers—people from different countries, organizations, and generations—who came together to help the youth understand that the Church exists because of the Mission of God. At the heart of the conference, our brother Peter led us on a journey through the entire Bible, showing how God’s mission is the overarching narrative of Scripture. This laid a strong foundation for the call to recover discipleship as the true measure of success for the Church and for the Church to recover their genetic code as presented by Jesus Christ in Mathew 28:16-19.

One powerful testimony came from a Bolivian missionary serving in Africa, reaching Somali communities with the gospel. What a joy to witness this growing cooperation in mission between Latin America and Africa!

It was no surprise when nearly one-tenth of the participants rushed to the front in response to the invitation to commit their lives to the Lord and to missions.

God is Moving in Africa

The Lord is moving in Africa, preparing and empowering the African Church to make a significant impact in reaching the lost. This is happening not only through a growing number of cross-cultural missionaries, but through the entire Church, as every member becomes an active agent of the Great Commission, spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed, as the Spirit leads, every time and everywhere.

The stage is set. The music is playing. And the dancers are moving toward the places in Latin America and Africa where the Spirit sounds “like a mighty rushing wind.” People are asking, “What does this mean?” The answer is clear: The Holy Spirit is raising a mission force in Africa and Latin America to go and make disciples of all nations.

Ways to Help

Prayer

  • Please pray the Lord helps us to continue building this cooperation among churches in Africa and Latin America to see the advancement of the gospel from everywhere to everywhere.
  • Please pray the Missional Church Network training and coaching material can be translated and contextualized to be used to help African Churches become missional.
  • Please pray for new opportunities for Latin Americans and Africans to join hands in making disciples of all nations.
