Brazil: Expanding Harvest Radio

Brazil is about 25% evangelical Christian. However, a significant percentage of those believers live in the larger coastal cities. In the smaller inland towns, there are few believers and little gospel witness. 

Aware of this need, Avant has focused its efforts on taking the gospel to the more remote regions of Brazil. One avenue is through radio ministry. For 20 years, Harvest Radio has consistently been on the air sharing the gospel and providing discipleship through its programs. This ministry is strategic because the average Brazilian listens to the radio for 4.5 hours a day.

Harvest Radio sends a strong signal to the west-central part of the state of Ceará but it does not reach into the northern part, where various Avant missionaries work. We want to expand the reach of Harvest Radio by installing a new station that will reach this northern region with the gospel.

Avant has started a project to help with the costs involved in setting up a new station. Through this project, Harvest Radio will be able to purchase the license, set up a simple studio in the town of licensing, and purchase a transmitter and antenna.

Our workers have learned that the new location and frequency are ideal for upgrading the medium-power FM station to a high-power station. With this upgrade, the station will more than double Harvest Radio’s coverage! Since the same radio programs will be used, and much of the work will be done by the current staff, Harvest Radio’s operating expenses will remain similar, but they will be reaching more than double the number of people!

We praise the Lord for how he has worked through Harvest Radio in the last 20 years. Many people have shared testimonies of how Harvest Radio played a part in their journey to faith in Jesus, and how they’ve grown through discipleship-oriented programs. God is using Harvest Radio to strengthen and grow His church in Brazil.
