Angola: Audio Bibles

Angola, a country still recovering from decades of civil war, has over 40 spoken languages and six unreached people groups. Portuguese is the official language, but only about 75–80% of the population speaks it, leaving many without access to Scripture in a language they understand.

One such group is the Nyaneka, who number over one million and live in the southwestern region of Angola. Currently, only the New Testament has been translated into their heart language, with a five-year goal underway to complete the Old Testament. As an oral people, however, many Nyaneka remain without meaningful access to God’s Word—a need this project seeks to meet.

Through this initiative, Avant is seeking to purchase and distribute 2,000 audio Bibles. These solar-powered digital devices are preloaded with the available translated Scriptures, biblical songs, the audio from the Jesus film, and other resources in the Nyaneka language. Designed for oral learners, audio Bibles are a powerful tool in cultures where storytelling remains the primary means of communication and teaching.

The initiative has received support from the local church association, and we are actively coordinating with national partners and missionaries who are working with the Nyaneka to gather and translate relevant materials for the devices.

Once funding is secured, we will place an order for the first 1,000 devices. National church leaders and missionaries will then train project leaders to distribute the audio Bibles and ensure their proper use and care.

Audio Bibles have proven instrumental in advancing the gospel across Africa. For the Nyaneka, this project represents a strategic and impactful first step toward planting a church and seeing lives transformed by the Word of God.
